CELEBRATE AND EXPLORE
OCEANS WEEK VICTORIA
JUNE 7-14, 2020
The ocean means many things to many people. Oceans Week Victoria is a new collaboration among organizations in our community to foster greater understanding and positive action for our local and global ocean, by providing educational and recreational events around World Oceans Day in June.
Due to COVID-19 social distancing measures across BC, Oceans Week Victoria 2020 will be hosted virtually! Check out our Calendar for a collection of online learning and entertainment activities from Sunday, June 7th to Sunday, June 14th organized by Action Themes throughout the week. There are lots of opportunities there for you to get involved from home!
WORLD OCEANS DAY
The celebration of World Oceans Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit. Here, a team from Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) proposed an annual Oceans Day to create a voice for the oceans, to empower those who live and work in coastal communities, and to strengthen the management and stewardship of the oceans.
The ocean means many things to many people. We eat from it.
We work and play on and in it.
It supplies most of our oxygen.
We get our weather from it,
no matter where we live.
And it contains somewhere between
500,000 and 10 million marine species.
We, and all life on this planet,
need a healthy global ocean.
